Being likable is an art but you can learn to paint
While being kind is generally preferable to being impolite, some forms of politeness make us feel curiously remote and miserable. Consider the person who, despite their greatest efforts, comes across as coldly polite. You can offer drinks, inquire about their journey, suggest additional gravy, or make a reference to recent prize-winning work, but you can't make your hospitality amusing or more memorable.
