Inside the brain of a gambling addict
What transpires in a gambler's brain during a bet, and can the source of their addiction be discovered within the mind itself? To find out, BBC Panorama captured a novel experiment. The partner of Wendy Bendel committed suicide after battling a 20-year gambling addiction. He singled out the high-stakes, high-frequency fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) available in bookmakers across the UK in a confession he wrote for Wendy. These machines give players a selection of games and combine potentially high stakes with a 20-second win chance.
